Australia's Points Test Explained: How to Score 65+ for Skilled Migration

Australia's skilled migration points test rewards age, English proficiency, qualifications, and work experience. Here's how to maximise your score.

To be invited to apply for an Australian skilled visa, you typically need a minimum of 65 points on the points test. But in practice, most people who receive invitations score 85 or above.

Points Breakdown

Age (max 30 pts): You score the most points between ages 25–32.

English Language (max 20 pts): Superior English (IELTS 8+) earns 20 points; proficient (IELTS 7+) earns 10.

Skilled Employment (max 20 pts): Up to 20 points for work experience in your nominated occupation.

Qualifications (max 20 pts): A PhD earns 20 points; a bachelor's degree earns 15.

Boosting Your Score

State nomination adds 5 points. A partner with strong skills can add 5 more. Professional Year Programs in Australia can add 5 points for certain occupations.
