How to Write a CV That Gets You Hired Abroad

International employers expect different things from a CV. Here's how to tailor your resume for the UK, Canada, Australia, and the Gulf.

A CV that works in one country may not work in another. Formatting standards, length expectations, and what to include all vary by destination.

UK and Australia

A 2-page CV is standard. Include a personal profile at the top. Do NOT include a photo, age, or marital status — it's illegal to ask in hiring decisions.

Canada

Called a "resume" in Canada. 1–2 pages max. Use bullet points and quantify achievements. No photo, no date of birth.

Gulf Region (UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia)

A photo is typically expected. Including your nationality and visa status is common. 2–3 pages is acceptable.

Germany

Germans prefer a photo (professional headshot). A Lebenslauf (tabular CV) is standard. Skills certifications are highly valued.

Universal Tips

Use keywords from the job description. Quantify your impact. Tailor each application. And always write a strong cover letter.
