IELTS vs PTE: Which English Test Should You Take for Immigration?

Both IELTS and PTE Academic are accepted for most immigration pathways — but they differ in format, scoring, and difficulty. Here's how to choose.

If you're applying for a visa to Canada, Australia, the UK, or New Zealand, you'll almost certainly need to prove your English proficiency. The two most accepted tests are IELTS and PTE Academic.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

Available in Academic and General Training formats. Scored from 1–9 in four bands: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Results in 3–5 days.

PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English)

Fully computer-based, including the speaking section (you speak to a microphone, not an examiner). Scored 10–90. Results typically in 48 hours.

Which is Harder?

It depends on your strengths. Many test-takers find PTE easier for speaking (no examiner nerves) but harder for writing under time pressure.

Which is Accepted Where?

Both are accepted by Australia, Canada, UK, New Zealand, and most universities. Always check your specific visa subclass or institution requirements.

Our Recommendation

Take a practice test for both. The one where you score higher in your mock test is likely your better option. AT&A Visahub can advise on target scores for your specific immigration pathway.
